The Fever, who had been in complete control, saw multiple chances to close out the game slip away. Indiana appeared to have the game won after Aliyah Boston's putback gave the Fever a 74-72 lead with 30 seconds left in regulation. However, the Aces refused to give up, and a clutch three-pointer by Chelsea Gray at the buzzer sent the game into overtime.
Caitlin Clark, who finished with 20 points and eight assists, took responsibility for the loss, stating, "Yeah, obviously just can't happen. And those are free throws I usually make and certainly frustrating." Clark's missed free throws with seven seconds remaining in regulation allowed the Aces to stay within one possession, setting the stage for Gray's game-tying shot.
The Aces' comeback was fueled by 22 turnovers by the Fever, which gave Las Vegas 18 points. Stephanie White, the Fever's head coach, attributed the loss to the team's inability to hold onto the ball, saying, "I look at our 22 turnovers. They gave them 18 points. It really came down to us giving them extra possessions with our turnovers."
The loss marked the Fever's second straight defeat after Sunday's 108-100 result against the Minnesota Lynx. The team dropped to 19-12 and sixth in the WNBA standings with 13 games left, while the Aces improved to 22-9 and remain second.
The rivalry between the Fever and the Aces has intensified since their meeting in last season's WNBA semifinals, where Las Vegas prevailed in five games. With both teams among the best in the league, another playoff meeting remains a real possibility.
The Fever return to action Saturday on the road against the Chicago Sky, looking to bounce back from their heartbreaking loss to the Aces.
