George Lombard Jr. made his MLB debut a night to remember, unleashing a shutout masterclass that left everyone in awe. The Yankees top prospect smashed a home run for his first hit and helped his team secure a 2-0 win over the Cardinals on Tuesday night.
A standout performance from Lombard's defense caught the attention of his manager, Aaron Boone. "A great first night for him. The home run was great, the defense was tremendous," Boone said of Lombard's debut. He praised Lombard's play in the second inning, where he ranged to his left, scooped a grounder, and fired to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second to complete an inning-ending double play.
Lombard's defense has long been considered major league ready, and he showcased it on Tuesday night. The play in the hole that he and Chisholm turned was "a pretty special turn," Boone said. Lombard attributes his success to hard work and practice. "One of those plays you practice. I've made that play countless times in practice," he said. "Just get into the game and your body takes over. It's not much thinking that went into it. Just saw it and tried to make a play on the ball."
Boone was left speechless by Lombard's defense, marveling at his physical gifts. "Just the ease at which he makes throws. Never feels like he has to reach for it and it has plenty of life on it," Boone said. He compared Lombard's play to that of a puma, saying, "I just think the athleticism, but the physicality he can play it with, is really what stands out… Like a puma."
Lombard's love for defense is something he's had since he can remember. "Since I can remember, it's something I always have a love for, a passion for," Lombard said. He tries to get a little work in every day and get a little better to help the pitchers with every play that he can make.
The Yankees will look to build on this momentum as they face the Cardinals again on Wednesday night. With Lombard's impressive debut and his defense, they'll be hoping to secure another win and continue their winning streak.
