Fuoco highlights district high school football games in Week 6

Polk County’s high school football teams face a make-or-break week in district play, with nearly all squads involved in contests that could determine their postseason fates. Winning outright in the district remains the surest route to claiming the title, though teams with one loss may still rely on MaxPreps rankings for at-large playoff bids and home-field advantage.

Winter Haven and Poinciana kick off Week 6 in a 6A-9 district clash. Both enter with 1-0 district records, but Winter Haven’s recent form gives them the edge in this tight race. The Blue Devils are forecast to move ahead by a 28-17 scoreline.

George Jenkins travels to Davenport needing a victory to stay in the district title conversation. After a recent loss to Haines City, Jenkins rebounded with a shutout win over Seminole, thanks largely to Malik Raymond’s running. Davenport’s offense has struggled, enduring three straight shutouts. Jenkins is projected to win 28-7.

Haines City hosts Ridge Community in a matchup where the Hornets can improve on last season’s win total with a victory. Ridge’s offense showed signs of life last week, scoring more points in one game than in their previous three combined. Still, Haines City is expected to prevail 17-7 and keep pace in the district race.

Lakeland meets Auburndale in a 5A-6 district game that pits two 3-1 teams against each other. Auburndale’s quarterback Teo Edwards has proven dangerous through the air, but their running game’s weakness could be exploited by Lakeland’s strong secondary. Lakeland head coach Marvin Frazier noted their recent win over nationally ranked American Heritage marks a high point at Bryant Stadium. The Dreadnaughts are predicted to take a 32-14 victory.

Lake Gibson travels to Osceola in a contest that will test the Braves’ playoff credentials. Both teams rank closely in MaxPreps’ 5A standings, with Osceola just ahead at No. 25 and Lake Gibson at No. 27. Osceola has lost heavily to other Polk County teams like Lakeland and Lake Wales. The forecast favors Osceola in a close 21-17 decision.

Bartow faces Sebring in a crucial 5A-6 district game, with the winner staying competitive in the race. Bartow needs the win to improve its playoff chances, especially as rivals Lakeland, Sebring, Osceola, and Lake Gibson hold higher rankings. Bartow is tipped to edge Sebring 24-21.

In 4A-7, Lake Wales hosts Brandon. Brandon leads the district after a 10-0 win over Kathleen but has suffered heavy losses in other games. Lake Wales is expected to dominate, with a projected 45-7 score.

Orlando Jones travels to Kathleen, where Jones is favored to win 32-6 after Kathleen finally scored last week.

Mulberry visits Tenoroc in a 3A-7 game marked by offensive struggles on both sides. Mulberry has scored just 33 points in five games, while Tenoroc has failed to score in seven quarters following a strong start to the season. Tenoroc is predicted to win 7-3.

Victory Christian visits Fort Meade in 1A-7 play. Victory Christian has won its last two games by shutouts and outscored opponents 84-7 over three wins. Fort Meade scored 50 points last week but faces a tougher test. Victory Christian is expected to win 35-6.

Lakeland Christian remains unbeaten as they travel to Moore Haven. After pulling away in the second half against Sebring, Lakeland Christian is projected to win 49-0.

All Saints take on St. Edward’s, where St. Edward’s is favored 22-14 despite All Saints reaching a season-high 26 points last week.

Elsewhere, Southwest Florida Christian defeated McLaughlin 19-12, and Frostproof beat Santa Fe Catholic 36-31.

Last week’s picks finished 8-3, pushing the season record to 53-17, according to Fuoco’s analysis published in The Ledger. This week’s slate of district games promises to reshape the standings as teams jockey for playoff positioning.
