Ella Toone scored her first Women’s Super League goal since December last year to help Manchester United Women claim a 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic, drawing level with Leah Galton for the club’s WSL scoring record.
The England international’s curling strike dipped beneath the crossbar and was her second goal of the season, but notably her first in the league this campaign. It brought Toone’s total to 35 WSL goals for Manchester United, matching Galton’s tally.
Manchester United secured their fifth consecutive victory with goals from Toone, Andrea Medina, and Julia Zigiotti on Sunday. The win lifted the Red Devils to fifth place in the WSL standings and maintained their strong run of form.
Toone’s goal carries another significance. With 35 league goals, she now shares the club’s all-time WSL scoring record with Galton. Her next league goal will make her Manchester United Women’s top scorer in the WSL.
She already holds other club records. Toone has made 219 appearances across all competitions, the most of any player, with Millie Turner next on 189 appearances. She is also the club’s leading scorer in all competitions, with 66 goals compared to Galton’s 44.
Unlike Turner and Galton, who both left the club last summer, Toone remains the only player to have featured for Manchester United Women since their inaugural 2018 season.
After their latest league win, Manchester United Women will face Liverpool in the Players’ Cup on Wednesday before hosting Manchester City in the WSL on Sunday. The match against City presents the chance for Toone to break the WSL goal record for United, a moment of personal significance as she is a lifelong fan of the club.
Toone’s season so far includes two goals, with her league tally just beginning to climb after a period without scoring in the WSL. The Red Devils will look to continue their unbeaten run and climb higher in the table in the coming fixtures.
