Former Browns WR David Bell sues for $300M after surgery that ended his NFL career

Former Cleveland Browns wide receiver David Bell has filed a lawsuit seeking more than $300 million in damages after a surgery he calls unnecessary nearly ended his life and abruptly ended his NFL career. Bell’s legal action targets Jefferson Health System and 14 other defendants, accusing them of misleading him into undergoing core muscle surgery based on misrepresented MRI results.

The surgery, according to Bell’s lawsuit, caused a severe injury to his femoral artery which required emergency treatment to save his life. The lawsuit alleges that the defendants were involved in a financial scheme prioritizing profit over Bell’s health and wellbeing.

Bell retired from professional football in October 2025 after spending three seasons with the Browns. He began the 2025 season on the non-football injury list before announcing his retirement on October 14. His career was cut short after 33 NFL games, in which he caught 41 passes for 408 yards and scored three touchdowns—all during the 2023 season.

The former Purdue standout was drafted in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft by Cleveland. At Purdue, Bell earned several accolades including Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Big Ten Receiver of the Year in 2019 and 2021, respectively. He also made two First-team All-Big Ten selections and one Second-team selection. Bell’s collegiate best came in 2021 when he caught 93 passes for 1,286 yards and six touchdowns.

The lawsuit, first reported by Ari Meirov, claims Bell was misled about the necessity of the surgery and suffered life-threatening complications as a result. The femoral artery injury led to emergency intervention and ultimately ended his ability to continue playing football. The suit asks for compensation exceeding $300 million, reflecting the damages Bell attributes to the medical decisions he challenges.

Bell’s case highlights growing scrutiny around medical procedures recommended to professional athletes and the responsibility of healthcare providers in evaluating risks. The Browns have not issued a statement regarding the lawsuit. Jefferson Health System and other named defendants have not publicly responded to the allegations.

As of October 2026, the legal action is ongoing with no further details released about court proceedings or potential settlements.
