Washington Commanders’ DC Daronte Jones warns Giants’ Jameis Winston is high risk, high reward

Jameis Winston’s erratic style has defined his NFL career, and Washington Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones is well aware of the challenge the Giants’ quarterback poses. Winston, who stepped in as New York’s starter after Jaxson Dart’s season-ending injury, will lead the 3-1 Giants against the 1-3 Commanders on Sunday at Northwest Stadium. Despite a modest 55% completion rate and three interceptions alongside three touchdowns this season, Winston has won both his starts in 2023.

Winston’s career numbers underline the risk and reward he embodies. Once the No. 1 overall pick in the 2015 draft, he has started 91 games with a 38-53 record and thrown 116 interceptions. Turnovers have been a long-standing criticism, but Winston’s ability to create big plays keeps him relevant. Jones acknowledged that duality in his assessment ahead of the divisional clash.

“Well, that same guy is also prone to making big plays,” Jones said with a laugh. “Jameis is a guy who is high risk, high reward, and because of his reward and the things and the plays that he’s made in his profession is why he’s still doing the things he’s doing now, and especially for the New York Giants and why they’re where they are right now is because of a lot of him and providing those opportunities.”

Jones recalled his encounters with Winston dating back to his time with the Bengals, Dolphins, and Vikings. “We can’t be mindful of ‘yeah, he’s gonna turn the ball over’. He can also put four or five touchdowns on you in a heartbeat,” Jones said. “His strength is his ability to one-snap and clear, and that’s dangerous for an opponent because whether it's a great play or not, he can move on. Whether it’s a bad play, he can move on.”

Winston’s unpredictability means the Commanders’ defense must be ready for anything. Washington has forced five turnovers in their last two games, a streak they will rely on to claim their first divisional win of the season. Holding Winston in check will be essential, but Jones’s comments reflect a cautious respect for the quarterback’s capacity to change a game in an instant.

The Giants’ offense hinges on Winston’s willingness to take chances, a trait that can either propel the team forward or derail drives. His 2-0 record as a starter in 2023 masks his uneven efficiency, but his ability to deliver touchdowns keeps New York competitive.

For the Commanders, the return of starting quarterback Jayden Daniels after a two-game absence adds another dimension to the contest. Daniels’s presence gives Washington a chance to stabilize their offense against a Giants team that has relied heavily on Winston’s volatility.

Sunday’s matchup promises to be a test of nerves as much as skill. Winston’s roller-coaster career means Washington’s defense must balance aggression with caution. Jones’s remarks suggest the Commanders are preparing not just to exploit Winston’s mistakes but to anticipate the big plays he is capable of producing at any moment.
