Dan Miller steps away from Detroit Lions radio booth after wife Cindy’s death at 63

Longtime Detroit Lions play-by-play announcer Dan Miller missed Sunday’s radio broadcast against the Arizona Cardinals following the death of his wife, Cindy, who was 63. Jason Benetti stepped in to cover the game from the radio booth.

Miller has been the Lions’ radio voice since 2005 and a familiar presence on Detroit television since 1997, currently serving as sports director at WJBK-TV Fox 2. His broadcasting career began in Washington DC, and before joining the Lions’ crew, he called NFL Europe games for Fox.

Benetti, who took over Lions television broadcasts for preseason games earlier this year, is the television play-by-play announcer for the Detroit Tigers since 2024. He also joined NBC’s "Sunday Night Baseball" coverage this fall. The decision to have Benetti fill in on the Lions’ radio broadcast follows Miller’s absence after Cindy’s passing.

Dan and Cindy Miller had four children: Sammi, Rikki, Tony, and Robbie. No further details about Cindy’s death have been released.

The Lions’ radio broadcast team will continue with Benetti’s temporary presence as the team moves forward without Miller for the time being.
