Carson Beck's NFL Debut Falls Flat as He Throws for Just 53 Yards
Carson Beck's highly anticipated NFL debut got off to a lackluster start, as the Arizona Cardinals quarterback threw for a paltry 53 yards in the team's 33-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers in the Hall of Fame game.
Beck, who completed 15 of his 19 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown in his first NFL action, was subbed out after the Cardinals' first drive of the third quarter in favor of Kedon Slovis. Despite his strong performance, Beck's limited yardage was a far cry from the 188 yards he accumulated in his debut.
The game was a closely contested affair, with the Panthers' Haynes King ultimately emerging victorious. King completed 21 of his 34 passes for 180 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, earning a 95.2 passer rating.
Beck's performance was notable for its inconsistency, with the quarterback showcasing flashes of brilliance before faltering. He had a 35-yard completion to Jalen Brooks in the first quarter and a 49-yard strike to Jalen Brooks in the second, but was unable to sustain his momentum.
Beck's collegiate career was marked by his time at the University of Georgia, where he accumulated 7,912 yards (No. 6 in Georgia history), 58 touchdowns, and 20 interceptions in his five-season tenure. He also won two national championships as a backup to Stetson Bennett.
Despite his underwhelming performance in his NFL debut, Beck remains a contender for a starting opportunity with the Cardinals. Arizona is expected to start Jacoby Brissett, a journeyman bridge quarterback, but Beck's continued strong play in the preseason could see him take the backup role and be in line to start should Brissett struggle or suffer an injury.
The Cardinals will be looking to Beck to build on his promising performance in their upcoming preseason games, with the quarterback set to face off against the Dallas Cowboys on August 14.
