Brijesh Patel Demands Uniform Coaching Standards Across 100 Indian Cricket Academies
A growing number of cricket coaching academies in India is creating a confusing landscape for young cricketers and their parents, according to former India batter Brijesh Patel.
Speaking at the launch of the book "Developing Champions in Cricket" by Vedam Jaishankar, Patel said, "Over the last two decades, we have witnessed an explosion of cricket coaching centres. While this is wonderful for the growth of the game, it has also created a new challenge, a lack of standardisation. Every academy claims to have the best method, while every coach has a different philosophy."
The mushrooming of coaching centres has led to a situation where every parent receives different advice and television experts have yet another opinion. This can be overwhelming for young cricketers, who need clear guidance to improve their skills.
Patel, who started an academy over four decades ago, underlined the need to create a safe and supportive environment for aspiring cricketers. "Parents want their children not just physically safe, but also emotionally secure. They must be protected from unhealthy influences, bullying, and unnecessary pressure. Creating that environment is the responsibility of every academy and every coach," he added.
Patel emphasized that coaching cannot follow a one-size-fits-all approach, with every youngster requiring guidance tailored to their background and abilities. "Youngsters come from every background imaginable. Some come from cities with excellent facilities, while others travel from small towns. Their exposure, culture, skill levels, and learning styles are different," he said.
The former administrator urged coaches and academies to focus on character-building. "Winning matches is important. Producing good human beings is even more important. Today, best practices are no longer optional," Patel opined.
The lack of standardization in cricket coaching academies is a pressing issue in India, where cricket is a highly popular sport. With over 100 academies operating across the country, there is a need for a uniform coaching standard to ensure that young cricketers receive consistent guidance.
