Alabama State's Secondary Revamped as Competition Heats Up in Fall Camp
Alabama State football coach Eddie Robinson Jr. claims his team's secondary is deeper and more talented compared to last season, thanks to a revamped cornerback position.
The Hornets reloaded through the transfer portal, adding seasoned players with more height to the room. This includes veterans like redshirt senior Trent Henry, who transferred from Troy, and junior Zach Williams, who transferred from Arkansas Pine-Bluff. Both bring range to the position.
Coach Robinson is pleased with the competition in the cornerback position, which he believes makes everyone play their best. "So it's a lot of options," he told the Montgomery Advertiser. "It'll sort itself out, as they say, but I think the competition is what makes everybody play their best."
Returning starter Greg Mangle is fully recovered from a soft tissue injury that limited him last season. He credits the returning players for acclimating themselves to cornerback coach Saeed Lee's system, and the new transfers for bringing the experience and competition with them.
Mangle believes the team is a lot deeper in depth and is trying to make some noise to dominate on both sides of the ball. The cornerback room is pushing to be one of the SWAC's best in the 2026 season.
The attention during the offseason has been on quarterback Andrew Body and the offense. However, the cornerback room is proving to be a force to be reckoned with.
The SWAC is a competitive conference, and Alabama State's secondary will be put to the test. The team's performance will be closely watched, especially with the revamped cornerback position.
