Rico Lewis joined Manchester City’s academy at the age of eight and has become one of its most distinctive graduates. Nominally a right-back, he spends much of the game in central midfield, a role Pep Guardiola designed around his reading of space and his calm under pressure.
Lewis scored on his Champions League debut in 2022, becoming the youngest Englishman to score on a first start in the competition. He was part of the squad that won the treble that season and collected a second Premier League medal in 2023/24.
Small and slight at 1.69 m, he compensates with positional intelligence and a sharp first touch. Lewis has also won senior England caps and is one of the homegrown players City’s new era is built around.
Playing style
Lewis is one of the clearest examples of Pep Guardiola’s positional ideas. Listed as a right-back, he spends much of the game in central midfield, receiving the ball between the lines and helping City dominate possession. His strength is his mind: he scans constantly, knows where the space is before the ball arrives and plays quick, simple passes. He is small and not especially fast, but he rarely loses the ball and presses intelligently. Few young players are as tactically mature.
International career
Lewis has represented England at every youth level from the Under-15s upwards. He made his senior debut in 2023 in a European Championship qualifier against North Macedonia and has been part of England squads since, competing for a place at right-back.
Career in numbers
Across 5 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2022/23, Lewis has played 119 matches and scored 7 goals for Manchester City. So far in 2026/27 he has made 3 appearances for Manchester City. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
