Biography

Rúben Dias arrived at Manchester City from Benfica in 2020 to fix a defence that had just conceded too often to win the title. It worked straight away. City won the Premier League in his first season, and Dias was named the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year, a rare honour for a centre-back.

A product of Benfica’s Seixal academy, Dias won the Portuguese title in 2018/19 before his move to England. At City he formed the spine of the team that won four consecutive league titles between 2021 and 2024, and he started the 2023 Champions League final win over Inter in Istanbul, completing the treble.

Dias is known less for pace than for organisation: he talks constantly, sets the defensive line and is at his best defending his own box. He now captains City, and for Portugal he has won the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and 2025.

Playing style

Dias is a traditional defender in the best sense. He wins his headers, blocks shots and organises the players around him, constantly talking and pushing the line up. He is not the quickest centre-back, but he reads danger early and positions himself so that pace is rarely tested. His passing is reliable rather than spectacular, and he is comfortable carrying the ball into midfield when space opens. Team-mates and coaches regularly describe him as a leader, and his intensity in training helped set the standards of City’s title-winning dressing room.

International career

Dias has been a fixture in Portugal’s defence since his debut in 2018. He won the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and again in 2025, and has played at the 2022 World Cup and several European Championships. With Pepe’s retirement, he became the leader of Portugal’s back line.

Career in numbers

Since his first senior season in 2017/18, Dias has made 399 club appearances and scored 18 goals in all competitions for 2 clubs. The 2018/19 season, with 4 goals from 55 matches for Benfica, remains his highest tally. So far in 2026/27 he has made 7 appearances for Manchester City.
