Florian Wirtz grew up in Pulheim near Cologne and joined Bayer Leverkusen from Köln’s academy as a teenager. He made his Bundesliga debut at 17 and became the club’s youngest-ever scorer.
He quickly became Leverkusen’s most important player. In 2023/24, under Xabi Alonso, he was named the Bundesliga’s player of the season as Leverkusen won an unbeaten league and cup double.
Liverpool signed him in 2025 for a then-British record fee. Wirtz is a key player for Germany.
Playing style
Wirtz is one of the most creative attacking midfielders in world football. He has exceptional close control, vision and passing, and he can dribble past opponents in tight spaces as if they were not there. He is also a good finisher and has improved his goalscoring each season. His ability to find space between the lines and create chances makes him a key player for both club and country. At Leverkusen he was the heartbeat of Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten team, and Liverpool paid a record fee because they see him as the centrepiece of their attack for years to come.
International career
Wirtz made his Germany debut in 2021 and scored the opening goal of Euro 2024, against Scotland in Munich. He formed an exciting partnership with Jamal Musiala at that tournament and has become one of the leaders of the national team.
Career in numbers
Across 7 seasons of senior club football, beginning in 2019/20, Wirtz has played 246 matches and scored 64 goals for 2 clubs. His most productive season in front of goal was 2023/24, when he scored 18 times in 49 games for Bayer Leverkusen. His busiest campaign was 2025/26, with 49 appearances.
