Wesley Fofana grew up in Marseille and began his professional career at Saint-Γtienne. Leicester City signed him in 2020, and in his first season he won the FA Cup as Leicester beat Chelsea at Wembley.
Chelsea paid around Β£75 million to sign him in 2022, one of the highest fees ever for a defender. Injuries, including a serious knee problem, limited him in his early years at Stamford Bridge, but when fit he is quick, athletic and strong in the tackle.
Fofana has represented France at youth level and has since been capped at senior level.
Playing style
Fofana is a quick, athletic centre-back whose recovery pace allows his team to defend with a high line. He is strong in the tackle, aggressive when stepping out to meet forwards and good in the air. With the ball he is composed and can carry it forward or play accurate passes through midfield. At Leicester he established himself within a season as one of the best young defenders in the Premier League, which is why Chelsea paid such a large fee. A serious knee injury and further setbacks limited his availability at Stamford Bridge, and his career has been about managing his fitness as much as his form. When fit, he gives Chelsea a defender who can cover huge spaces.
International career
Fofana represented France at youth level, including the Under-21s, and has since been capped at senior level. Injuries have prevented him from building a long run in the national team, where competition at centre-back is intense.
Career in numbers
Since his first senior season in 2018/19, Fofana has made 159 club appearances and scored 5 goals in all competitions for 3 clubs. His busiest campaign was 2020/21, with 42 appearances. So far in 2026/27 he has made 5 appearances for Chelsea. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
