Reece James joined Chelsea’s academy at the age of six and grew up in Redbridge, east London. A loan season at Wigan Athletic in 2018/19, where he was named the club’s player of the year, prepared him for first-team football.
He broke into Chelsea’s side in 2019/20 and in 2021 started the Champions League final win over Manchester City, largely keeping Raheem Sterling quiet. His crossing, shooting and physical power make him one of the most complete right-backs in Europe, and he has also played at centre-back and in midfield.
Injuries have repeatedly interrupted his career, but James was made club captain and led Chelsea to the 2025 Club World Cup title. His sister Lauren plays for Chelsea Women and England.
Playing style
James is one of the most complete right-backs in world football. He is strong, quick and technically excellent, with outstanding crossing and a powerful shot. He is equally comfortable defending one-on-one and attacking, and he can also play at centre-back or in midfield. His set-piece delivery is a major weapon for Chelsea. Injuries have been the only obstacle to his career, limiting his appearances in several seasons, but when fit he is one of the most influential players in the Premier League.
International career
James made his England debut in 2020 and played at Euro 2020, where England reached the final. Injury kept him out of the 2022 World Cup and Euro 2024. When fit, he has been one of England’s options at right-back.
Career in numbers
James’s senior club career, which began in 2018/19, has so far brought 281 appearances and 19 goals for 2 clubs. The 2021/22 season, with 6 goals from 39 matches for Chelsea, remains his highest tally. His busiest campaign was 2020/21, with 47 appearances. So far in 2026/27 he has made 6 appearances for Chelsea. The full season-by-season record is in the Stats section of this profile.
