Wigan's Super League Lead is Slashed as Wakefield Pulls Off a Major Upset

A stunning comeback from Wakefield Trinity has seen Wigan Warriors' lead at the top of the Super League table drastically reduced, after the visitors pulled off a hard-fought 24-20 victory.

Wigan had looked to be in control after two quickfire tries from Liam Marshall and a length-of-the-field try from Jai Field had put them 20-0 up at break. However, a spirited second-half performance from Wakefield, including a try from Corey Hall and another from Ky Rodwell, gave the visitors a lifeline.

Bevan French opened the scoring for Wigan, but it was a strong second half from Wakefield that turned the game on its head.

Wigan's dominance in the first half was built on strong attacking play, with Marshall and Field causing problems for the Wakefield defence.

The visitors, however, showed great resilience and determination to fight back and claim a major upset.

Wigan's victory had been built on a strong team effort, with Field and Marshall both scoring tries and Keighran kicking five field goals.

Wigan Warriors: Field; Eckersley, Keighran, Wardle, Marshall; French, Smith; Havard, O'Neill, Thompson, McDermott, Partington, Ellis.

Interchanges: Mago, Kerr, Cartwright, O'Connor.

Wakefield Trinity: Jowitt; Myers, Scott, Hall, Pratt; Sinfield, Trueman; McMeeken, Lipowicz, Storton, Rodwell, Smoothy, Lolesio.

Interchanges: Hamlin-Uele, Faatili, Smith, Guler.

The result sees Wigan's lead at the top of the Super League table drastically reduced, and Wakefield's victory will give them renewed confidence going into their next match.
