The Washington Commanders are facing a significant blow to their offense after left tackle Laremy Tunsil suffered a torn triceps in practice, leaving him expected to miss most of the 2026 season.
The five-time Pro Bowler will need surgery to repair the injury, which has left the Commanders searching for a replacement at arguably the most important position on the offensive line.
Tunsil was acquired by the Commanders in a trade with Houston in March 2025 and had started 14 of 17 games last season. He signed a two-year, $60.2 million contract extension during the offseason, a move that was hoped would help keep quarterback Jayden Daniels healthy.
Daniels, the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, missed 10 games last season due to a series of injuries, including a sprained left knee, a strained right hamstring, and a dislocated left elbow.
The Commanders will now have to find a solution to replace Tunsil, with options including moving either swing lineman Andrew Wylie or right tackle Josh Conerly Jr. to the left side, or plugging in Brandon Coleman, a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft who manned the position before Tunsil's arrival last year.
Tunsil was originally a first-round draft pick, No. 13 overall, by the Miami Dolphins in 2016. He has been one of the league's premier blind-side protectors, and his absence will be felt on the field.
The Commanders' regular-season opener is just around the corner, with their first game scheduled for September 13 at Philadelphia. With Tunsil expected to miss most of the season, they will need to find a quick solution to replace him.
The team's search for a replacement will likely be a priority in the coming weeks, with the NFL draft and free agency period offering potential solutions.
