Mikey Romero did not simply have a productive afternoon for Triple-A Worcester; he delivered the type of performance players may experience once in an entire career.
The Boston Red Sox prospect went a perfect 6-for-6 in Worcester's 19-0 destruction of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on Saturday at Polar Park. Romero became only the fifth Minor League player to record six hits in a game this season and just the third to produce six hits in exactly six at-bats, according to MLB.com.
Romero started his historic afternoon with a first-inning single to right field. His next five plate appearances unfolded almost like a video game: home run, single, single, double and another single. Every trip to the plate ended the same way. Romero reached base with a hit, and Worcester continued piling on runs.
Romero's performance is especially rare, as only two Red Sox players have accomplished the feat in a Major League game since 1982: Nomar Garciaparra in 2003 and Rafael Devers in 2019.
The home run also provided another promising development for Romero. He has gone deep in consecutive games, raising his season total to 11 homers across 86 appearances with Worcester. That power surge could become especially important as the 22-year-old attempts to force his way into Boston's long-term plans.
Romero's development has not followed a perfectly smooth path. Injuries limited him to 34 games in 2023, and he experienced offensive inconsistency while advancing through Boston's system. However, Saturday showed why the Red Sox remained patient.
Romero's latest power surge may have the organization reconsidering the timeline for his promotion to the Majors. If his latest performance becomes a sustained run, the Red Sox may have another prospect pushing for an opportunity sooner than expected.
Saturday also featured an outstanding performance from Boston's No. 17 prospect, Gage Ziehl. The right-hander struck out eight, did not issue a walk and surrendered only two hits across 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his Triple-A debut.
Romero's historic performance overshadowed Ziehl's impressive outing, but it's clear that both players are making a strong case for themselves in Boston's system. As Romero continues to excel in Triple-A, it will be interesting to see if he can sustain this level of performance and make a push for a spot in the Red Sox's lineup.
