Luther Burden III's Absence Looms Large for Depleted Bears

Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III is expected to miss some time as he recovers from a groin injury, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The injury occurred during practice on Saturday, with Burden III leaving early with a trainer after going down awkwardly.

The Bears' wide receiver depth now looks very thin without Burden III. Chicago opted to trade away veteran wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills in the offseason, placing a lot of pressure on the team's young wide receiver foundation.

Rome Odunze is currently the top wide receiver for the Bears, heading into his third season. He played in 12 games last year, finishing with 661 yards and six touchdowns. However, Odunze is now joined by a less experienced group of players, including Kalif Raymond, Zavion Thomas, Jahdae Walker, and Scotty Miller.

The Bears drafted Thomas in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, while Walker went undrafted last year but landed with Chicago. Miller, a veteran option, spent the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team's wide receiving group was already expected to be inexperienced, but losing the talent of Burden III for the foreseeable future definitely hurts.

Quarterback Caleb Williams will rely on Odune, running back D'Andre Swift, and tight ends Colston Loveland and Cole Kmet as his main options while Burden III is sidelined unless one of the depth wide receivers steps up. The Bears have some time to recover, with their regular season start over a month away, but they will need to find a way to compensate for the loss of Burden III.

The injury to Burden III is a significant blow to the Bears, particularly with the team's young wide receivers still developing. The Bears will need to rely on Odunze and the other depth receivers to step up and provide support for Williams and the rest of the offense.
