Broncos Coach Set to Make Roster Cuts After Day 8 of Training Camp
Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph is running today's practice at Broncos Park in Centennial, Colo., with Head Coach Sean Payton out at the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.
The Denver Broncos are nearing the end of their second week of training camp, and with that comes the inevitable roster cuts. As of Day 8, Head Coach Sean Payton is still out at the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, for QB Drew Brees' induction, leaving defensive coordinator Vance Joseph to run the show at Broncos Park in Centennial, Colo.
Pat Bryant is establishing himself as the Broncos' WR and a trusted target for QB Bo Nix. Bryant had 5 or 6 catches in practice today, according to reports, and was heavily involved in the team drills. He showed flashes of his talent late last season before injuries derailed his rookie year.
Bryant's play has been a constant throughout the first week or so of Broncos Camp, and he stepped up today with Jaylen Waddle and Marvin Mims sidelined. He was the Broncos' top playmaker and Bo Nix's most trusted target throughout practice, including what some are calling the best play of camp thus far.
Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph praised Bryant, saying he is the "Complete package." He added that Bryant "blocks and catches the ball in traffic," goes up and gets the ball vertically, is great in the red zone, has great size, and has just been playing well all camp.
Jonah Coleman is also turning heads at Broncos Camp. The Broncos rookie back had an excellent practice today and showcased why the team drafted him early in the 4th round. Outside of veteran JK Dobbins, Coleman has become the Broncos' best between-the-tackles runner on the team during camp.
Coleman had several good runs between the tackles, including a high-effort touchdown during a tight red zone period. This is where Coleman thrived in college, and where he will likely thrive again in the NFL. He thrives in areas that second-year back RJ Harvey struggled last season (between the tackles) and could push for the RB2 role.
Eyioma Uwazurike is another bright spot at Broncos Camp. He turned himself into an important rotational run defender last season, but after working on his body some this offseason, he has become "a pass rusher" according to defensive coordinator Vance Joseph. Joseph told reporters that Uwazurike has "changed his body" and "leaned out" and mentioned how he plays all over the defensive line.
Uwazurike has been dominant the past two days, according to Joseph, and has been fun to watch. He has the excellent size and length you look for, plus elite strength. If he can add some pass-rushing moves, he could become a key contributor to the Broncos' defense.
The Broncos are expected to make roster cuts soon, and it will be interesting to see how the team shapes up. With several players impressing at camp, it's likely that some will be let go to make room for younger talent. As the team heads into the final stretch of training camp, one thing is certain: the competition for roster spots is heating up.
