Tramell Jones Opens Up on Florida’s QB Competition

Florida's quarterback competition is heating up with redshirt freshman Tramell Jones Jr. making a strong case for the starting spot.

Jones Jr. spoke with the media on Friday, discussing his progress this summer and expectations heading into fall camp. He highlighted the importance of learning the new playbook and working with a new coaching staff, citing his own process of studying and drilling in information.

Jones Jr. emphasized the difference between being a good and great quarterback, saying, "I think that's the difference between being a good quarterback and a great quarterback. I mean, being able to sustain a lot of information at one time and not playing robotic, 'cause they're not about playing robotic."

He revealed his own approach to learning the playbook, stating, "Really, just like what he does throughout the playbook. I mean, some of the questions I ask when the coaches aren't there, but really, I've been trying to learn it all myself, just because that's what I have to do in the game; nobody's gonna be able to help me."

Jones Jr. also discussed his relationship with fellow quarterback Aaron Philo, describing him as "smart" and highlighting Philo's ability to "know where they go with the football" and "make any throw."

Jones Jr.'s own strengths lie in his accuracy and arm strength, which he believes give him an edge in the competition. However, he stressed the importance of process and making plays, saying, "I can make any throw, but am I making it in the correct way?"

Jones Jr.'s journey to the quarterback position began in middle school, where he was initially switched from quarterback to receiver. However, he eventually found his way back to the position in high school and has since been determined to make it his own.

Jones Jr. is now facing a new challenge with a whole new offense and a coaching staff he's never worked with before. He believes that adaptability is key, saying, "You gotta be able to adapt, and that's what makes somebody a great player: being able to adapt on the fly, and being able to switch up anytime."

As the competition for the starting quarterback spot heats up, Jones Jr. is making a strong case for himself. With his accuracy, arm strength, and determination, he's definitely a player to watch this season.

Florida's quarterback competition will continue to unfold as the team enters fall camp. With Jones Jr. and Philo vying for the starting spot, the Gators' offense is sure to be a force to be reckoned with.
