Beau Hossler leads the Wyndham Championship by one stroke after a 3-under 67 on Friday, with a victory required to make the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Beau Hossler's 11-foot birdie putt on his final hole on Friday has given him a one-stroke lead in the Wyndham Championship.
The 12-under 128 total has Hossler at the top of the leaderboard, ahead of Ben James and Jordan Smith, who both shot 67s to move into contention.
James, who had the 36-hole lead in the Canadian Open, has made a strong recovery to be one shot behind Hossler, while Smith of England has moved into a tie for second after a 64.
Hossler needs a victory to make the FedEx Cup playoffs, with a top-70 finish required to advance to the postseason.
Keegan Bradley, who is at No. 72 in the FedEx Cup, has clung to playoff fate with a 67 on Friday, finishing at 3-under 137.
Bradley's birdie on three of his last six holes was enough to keep him in contention, despite being well outside the projected cut earlier in the tournament.
The first step was making the 36-hole cut, and there was plenty of drama, with Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Ben Kohles both missing birdie putts on their final hole to knock out Bradley, Andrew Putnam, and Austin Smotherman.
Davis Chatfield bogeyed his last hole to move the 3-under number to a tie for 64th, giving those players a little breathing room.
Meanwhile, Jordan Spieth has made the cut, though he already is set for the postseason and is hopeful of making progress toward moving into the top 50 after the first playoff event and locking up all the $20 million signature events.
Spieth brought the drama on Friday, putting his tee shot well right into the trees on his final hole, but holing the 25-foot wedge putt for par to make the weekend.
Jason Day, who had reached the postseason 18 straight years, missed the cut by seven shots, while Mac Meissner was more crushing, missing by one shot after a double bogey on his final hole.
Hossler was unconcerned with all this, knowing only a victory will get him into the playoffs, and he's been around long enough to realize the tournament is halfway over.
James, who holed out for eagle on his first hole Friday, played 1 under the rest of the way for a 67, which puts him in the final group on the weekend for the second time in three months.
Brooks Koepka (No. 86) shot a 66 but was tied for 21st, and can only advance if no more than three players finish ahead of him.
