Chase Utley Set to Join Exclusive Phillies Wall of Fame
A six-time All-Star and member of the 2008 World Series championship team, Chase Utley is now a Phillie Wall of Famer.
Utley's induction was celebrated Friday night at Citizens Bank Park, with a star-studded ceremony featuring Hall of Famers Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton. He was greeted with a jersey presentation by former teammate Jimmy Rollins, who was in attendance. Utley's plaque now hangs in the left field plaza at Citizens Bank Park.
The 2008 World Series championship team was a pivotal moment in the Phillies' history, marking their first World Series title since 1980. Utley was a key player on that team, and his induction to the Wall of Fame solidifies his place in Phillies lore. He played 13 seasons in Philadelphia before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2015.
Utley's popularity in Philadelphia stems from his hustle, heart, and all-out attitude on the field. Fans fell in love with him from the moment he ran around the bases after hitting his first grand slam in the majors. He was beloved for his sweet swing and his ability to make the impossible play.
As a special assistant to the president for the Dodgers, Utley is still involved in the game he loves. He retired in 2018 with a .275 average, .823 OPS, and 1,885 hits. No Phillie has worn his number, 26, since he was traded, and he seems content with that.
Utley's induction to the Wall of Fame is not the only recognition he has received in his career. He appeared on the Hall of Fame ballot for the third time and received 59.1% of the vote, up from 39.8% the previous year. He still needs to reach 75% to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Utley's speech during the ceremony was heartfelt and humble, thanking his teammates, coaches, and the organization for the incredible experience. He was presented with a replica of his Wall of Fame plaque by actor Rob Mac, who has a character in the TV show "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" who wants to have a catch with Utley.
The ceremony also included a nod to Utley's time with the Phillies, with the team ditching their usual City Connect uniforms for their traditional home pinstripes. Bryce Harper suggested the change, and Utley appreciated the gesture.
Utley's Wall of Fame induction is a testament to his dedication and passion for the game. He will now be remembered alongside some of the greatest Phillies players of all time.
