Biography

The first time Kylian Mbappรฉ broke into open space, defenders discovered a problem that has followed them ever since. Catching him was one challenge. Predicting what he would do next was another. His speed grabbed the headlines, but it was never the only reason he became one of football’s biggest stars. He timed his runs with intelligence, finished chances with remarkable composure and delivered in the biggest matches while still in his teens. Long before reaching his peak, he had already become the player opponents feared whenever the ball was played into space behind the defence.

Mbappรฉ was born on December 20, 1998, in Bondy, a suburb of Paris, France. Football shaped his childhood. His father, Wilfried Mbappรฉ, worked as a football coach, while his mother, Fayza Lamari, was a former handball player. He developed at local club AS Bondy before joining Clairefontaine, France’s famous national football academy, where many of the country’s best young players had trained. His talent quickly attracted attention from major European clubs, but AS Monaco won the race for his signature and gave him the platform to begin his professional career.

His breakthrough came at Monaco during the 2016-17 season under Leonardo Jardim. Mbappรฉ played with confidence far beyond his years, scoring goals in Ligue 1 and the UEFA Champions League as Monaco won the French league title and reached the Champions League semi-finals. Paris Saint-Germain moved quickly to sign him, first on loan before making the transfer permanent in 2018. At PSG, he developed into the club’s leading attacking player, winning multiple Ligue 1 titles, domestic cups and becoming the club’s all-time leading goalscorer. Every season brought more goals, more records and more evidence that he belonged among football’s elite.

His performances for France placed him on an even bigger stage. At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Mbappรฉ scored four goals, including one in the final against Croatia, helping France lift the trophy for the second time in the nation’s history. Four years later, he almost carried France to another World Cup title in Qatar. He scored a remarkable hat-trick in the final against Argentina and finished the tournament with the Golden Boot, although France fell short in a penalty shootout. Those tournaments confirmed his ability to perform when the pressure was at its highest.

One match continues to define Mbappรฉ’s rise more than any other. During France’s round-of-16 victory over Argentina at the 2018 World Cup, the 19-year-old tore through one of football’s strongest defences with breathtaking pace and fearless attacking play. He won a penalty after a stunning run from inside his own half before scoring twice in a 4-3 victory. Argentina struggled to contain him throughout the evening, and the performance announced him as football’s next global superstar. It remains one of the finest World Cup displays produced by such a young player.

In the summer of 2024, Mbappรฉ completed the move many had expected for years by joining Real Madrid. The transfer brought together one of the world’s biggest clubs and one of the game’s biggest talents. He arrived after winning every major domestic honour in France and establishing himself as the country’s captain. At Real Madrid, he continues to carry enormous expectations, but that has been a familiar part of his career from the beginning. His pace, finishing and confidence remain the qualities that define him, and he continues to be one of the leading figures in world football.
