Newport's O'Brien Hails 'Amazing' Roma Performance
Former Newport County captain Mark O'Brien has praised the club's performance against Roma, calling it an "amazing" night at Rodney Parade.
The Exiles went down 4-1 against the three-time Serie A champions in front of a sell-out home crowd four days before their domestic campaign kicks off with a League Cup tie at AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
The occasion served as further reason for fans to be optimistic following the appointment of Hayden Mullins as their new manager.
"It was amazing and great to have a massive encounter with such a big team," O'Brien told Radio Wales Breakfast.
Newport's new manager, Hayden Mullins, fielded six summer signings in his starting XI, and O'Brien argued the experience for the squad outweighed any result.
"It was always going to be a tough task, but the bigger picture was the occasion, to be able to give something back to the fans and the city," O'Brien added.
The former captain believes the experience will benefit the squad in their League Two campaign, and fans have something to look forward to.
"Every team in League Two wants promotion – but with the manager being in such a short period, for now I look at it and think let him get his hands on the squad and implement what he's spoken about," said O'Brien.
Newport will face Rochdale in their League Two opener on Saturday, 15 August, following the League Cup tie at Wimbledon.
O'Brien is confident that the squad will not have any issues this season, citing the experience gained from the relegation battle last season and the addition of new players.
"They'll go to Wimbledon on Saturday and the fans have something to look forward to and be hopeful for," O'Brien said.
Newport County will be looking to build on the momentum gained from the Roma match as they begin their League Two campaign.
