The Dodgers made two surprise deadline-day deals to bolster their catcher situation, acquiring Ben Rortvedt and Hunter Feduccia in separate trades.
The team had been without All-Star Will Smith, who's on the injured list, and his backup Dalton Rushing, who's dealing with a minor injury. With the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline looming, the Dodgers brought in Rortvedt and Feduccia to shore up their catching depth.
Rortvedt, 28, was recently designated for assignment by the New York Mets, while Feduccia, 29, was traded to the Rays in July 2025 in a deal that sent Rortvedt to the Dodgers.
The two acquisitions were relatively minor in the grand scheme, and the Dodgers' catching situation will likely return to normal once Smith and Rushing are healthy.
Rortvedt will join the Dodgers after being sent to New York in return for reliever Chayce McDermott, who was DFA'd by the Dodgers.
Feduccia, who made his major league debut with the Dodgers in 2024, will return to the team after being traded to the Rays in 2025.
The Dodgers' heavy lifting came on Saturday with the acquisition of Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers, a two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner who will make his debut on Tuesday in Chicago.
The question now is who will be behind the plate for Skubal, and the Dodgers will have to decide between Rortvedt and Feduccia when Smith and Rushing are healthy.
The Dodgers' catcher situation will be clarified in the coming days, and it will be interesting to see how Rortvedt and Feduccia fit into the team's plans.
