Moeen Ali, the former England all-rounder, has praised Ashish Nehra, the Gujarat Titans head coach, as cricket's sharpest brain.
Moeen Ali has played under some of the game's leading captains and coaches, but he says Nehra stands out from the rest. Nehra's coaching journey began with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as their bowling coach.
Nehra's stint at RCB was marked by the team's struggles, and he faced criticism for their inconsistent performance. However, he was handed a bigger role when he became Gujarat Titans' head coach in 2022.
The Gujarat Titans made history in their debut IPL season, winning the title and making Nehra the first Indian head coach to lift the IPL trophy.
Moeen Ali spoke about what makes someone a great cricket thinker on the Beard Before Wicket podcast. He said, "For me, a cricketing brain is somebody who knows almost every situation of the game. Someone who's got an answer—or a theory—for every situation."
According to Moeen, a great cricket thinker is someone who can analyze every aspect of the game, including why a player is good or bad, and what should happen in a particular situation. He said, "He just talks about all aspects. 'Why he's not that good, why he is good, what should happen in this situation, what could happen'."
Moeen praised Nehra for his ability to understand and manage the game, saying, "He's got something. And behind that something, there's either data or evidence. Like, 'It's happened before, and this happened, and this is why this can happen'."
Moeen Ali has high praise for Nehra's ability to get a team environment going and deal with players, coaches, and people. He said, "He knows how to get a team environment going, knows how to deal with people, players, and coaches. Amazing, amazing cricket brain."
The Gujarat Titans have had a remarkable run since Nehra took over as head coach, missing the playoffs only once in five seasons. Despite often starting tournaments without being considered among the favourites, they have consistently performed well.
As for what's next for Nehra and the Gujarat Titans, the team will look to build on their success in the upcoming season. With Nehra at the helm, they will be looking to make another deep run in the tournament.
