Ipswich Sign 27-Year-Old Japan Forward Maeda from Celtic
Ipswich Town have secured the signing of Japan forward Daizen Maeda from Celtic on a three-year contract, with the 28-year-old joining the Premier League side in a reported £10m deal.
Ipswich manager Gary O'Neil believes Maeda will be "a valuable member" of his squad, citing the forward's impressive physical attributes and ability to score goals and create for his team.
Maeda joins Ipswich following their promotion back into the top flight after they finished second in the Championship under Kieran McKenna last season. He will be looking to replicate his form at Celtic, where he scored 79 goals in 212 appearances and won five league titles, three Scottish Cups, and two League Cups.
The Japan international has also been part of his country's squad at the 2026 World Cup, helping them reach the last 32 before being knocked out by Brazil. Maeda expressed his delight at joining Ipswich, stating that he has "always dreamed of playing in the Premier League" and is "very happy" to be joining the club.
In a social media post to the "Celtic family", Maeda said "the last four and a half years at Celtic have been the most special chapter of my career and my life". He added: "It has been an incredible honour to wear this badge, to play for this amazing club, and to share so many unforgettable moments with my teammates, the staff, and the best supporters in the world.
Maeda's arrival at Ipswich is part of a busy summer for the club, who have also signed defender Issa Diop, winger Abdul Fatawu, striker Emersonn, and goalkeeper Kayne van Oevelen. Defender Cedric Kipre and forward Chuba Akpom have also signed on a permanent basis following successful loans last season.
Maeda leaves a big gap at Celtic, who will miss his pace and energy in the coming season. The Japanese forward was instrumental in Celtic's success last season, scoring seven goals in five Premiership matches, including the winner in a crucial match against Hearts.
Celtic have thanked Maeda for his contribution to the club, stating that he was a "firm favourite" with fans and that his "relentless energy and vital goals were an essential part of the team over the past four-and-a-half years". The club wishes Maeda all the best for the future as he embarks on a new chapter at Ipswich Town.
