Noah Lyles Blazes to World-Leading 9.79 in Sizzling 100m Victory
Noah Lyles ran a world-leading 9.79 seconds to claim an impressive victory in the 100m at the US athletics championships.
The 29-year-old American finished ahead of Ronnie Baker in second and third-placed Kenny Bednarek, who were both given a time of 9.88. This dominant display sees Lyles equal his personal best, which he set in winning gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Lyles' statement on his performance was clear: "I think I made that 'I'm still the world's fastest man' statement." He also addressed the notion that this is an off year for the sport, saying, "Just because it is an off year doesn't mean that I plan to run slow."
Former world champion Christian Coleman was fourth in 9.93, while the previous best 100m in 2026 was the 9.82 set by Jamaica's Oblique Seville in June.
Sha'Carri Richardson, the 2023 world champion, won the women's 100m as she clocked 10.77. The 26-year-old equalled her best time of the season as Kayla White finished second with 10.90 and Tamari Davis third in 11.00.
Richardson spoke about her performance, saying, "It just feels phenomenal to be back in a better place, just healthy mentally, physically and emotionally." She has had troubles off the track, but it seems her hard work with her coach is starting to pay off.
