MIAMI (AP) — The Marlins' losing streak has reached a staggering 10 games after a 4-2 defeat to the San Diego Padres on Friday night.
Pinch-hitter Luis Rengifo's tiebreaking two-run homer in the eighth inning sealed the loss for Miami, while the Padres' Ty France and Manny Machado each had two hits to contribute to the win.
The Marlins, who were a season-best 10 games over .500 following their win over Seattle on July 9, have fallen to 52-52. This is the Marlins' longest slide since they lost 10 straight in June 2011.
Joe Mack and Heriberto Hernández homered for Miami's runs, but the Padres' offense was too much to handle. Adrian Morejon got the last out in the seventh and followed with a scoreless eighth before Mason Miller closed for his 26th save.
Padres' starter Germán Márquez was on a limited workload and exited after 2 1/3 innings and 37 pitches. He gave up one run and three hits, while striking out four and walking one.
The Padres finished with five hits but drew seven walks. San Diego is 3-5 on their 10-game road trip following the All-Star break.
Miami's starter, Ryan Gusto, completed the first 3 1/3 innings in the bullpen game for the Marlins. He allowed one run and two hits and struck out four.
The Marlins will look to bounce back on Saturday against the Padres. Left-hander JP Sears will start for the Padres against Miami's right-hander Eury Pérez.
