London Spirit's Title Bid Falls Short Despite Liam Livingstone's Heroics
For the fifth time in six seasons, London Spirit's men began their campaign with defeat as Manchester Super Giants edged a thriller by seven runs in front of 23,847 spectators at Lord's.
The opening day of The Hundred 2026 was supposed to be a fresh start for London Spirit, with new owners, coaches, players, and a new captain. However, the team's struggles continue, with a painful familiar result.
Liam Livingstone provided the evening's real entertainment with an extraordinary all-round performance. The Spirit captain put Manchester in, but they were initially made to toil by Tim Seifert, who marked his first Hundred appearance with 67 from 45 balls.
Livingstone then took matters into his own hands, bowling 20 of the final 25 deliveries and conceding only 14 runs. He took two wickets as Manchester spectacularly lost seven wickets for 35 runs.
The required rate climbed, but Livingstone rebuilt alongside Kiran Carlson (19) and added 68 with Dewald Brevis. However, Manchester's England pace duo held their nerve, with Gus Atkinson removing Brevis and finishing with figures of two for 15.
Livingstone's 69 from 40 balls, coupled with figures of two for 14, earned him the Match Hero award. However, his heroics were not enough to secure the win for Spirit, who finished on 131 for six.
The women's game was less dramatic, with London Spirit promptly collapsing to 23 for four in the powerplay. They were eventually bowled out for 80 in 91 balls, allowing Manchester to complete a seven-wicket win.
The sobering beginning to what was supposed to be a fresh chapter for London Spirit has left many questions about the team's chances in the competition. Despite Livingstone's encouraging performance, the team's struggles continue.
"We bowled some really good stuff through the middle, dragged it back towards the end, and we nearly chased it down," Livingstone said. "We just got a bit too far behind the rate to catch up in the end."
The loss leaves London Spirit with a long way to go to catch up with the leaders in the competition. The team will be looking to bounce back from this disappointing start and make a push for the title.
London Spirit will be in action again on Friday, looking to turn their fortunes around and get back on track.
