Iowa native Reggi Spotts commits to Iowa State women’s basketball after sudden offer

Reggi Spotts was sitting in her dorm room at North Iowa Area Community College this past April when Iowa State assistant coach and general manager Billy Fennelly called with an unexpected offer to join the Cyclones women’s basketball team. The conversation lasted barely five minutes before Spotts switched her commitment from Northern Illinois to Iowa State, a move she described as a dream come true.

The 5-foot-8 guard from Nora Springs had been preparing to play for Northern Illinois after two productive seasons at NIACC, where she averaged 16.3 points per game. Her basketball journey started at Mason City High School, where she consistently scored in double figures all four years, peaking with 17.9 points per game as a junior.

Spotts said she didn’t hesitate to accept the offer. “I took it just like that,” she recalled. “I was like, I know what my parents want. I know what I want and this will be a dream come true.” She immediately called her mother, Cathy. “She was just bawling the rest of the day,” Spotts said.

The close-to-home move means a lot to Spotts. Iowa State is just an hour and a half from her hometown, and her family has strong ties to the university. Both her mother and brother Blake earned degrees there, and the family has long followed Iowa State sports. Spotts said they are now “Iowa State fans through and through.”

Spotts will likely come off the bench for the Cyclones but said she intends to make the most of her role. “I think whatever role I’m going to be in, I am going to do it the best of my abilities,” she said.

The sudden offer from Iowa State came without a formal visit, which made the decision even more surprising. Spotts described the moment as unexpected but clear. “This was a dream school,” she said. “It’s an hour and a half from my hometown.”

Her arrival adds depth to Iowa State’s backcourt options as the program looks ahead to its upcoming season. Spotts’s local roots and family connection to the Cyclones add an extra layer of meaning to the signing.

Billy Fennelly’s quick call shifted the trajectory of Spotts’s basketball career within minutes. The Cyclones announced her addition soon after the call, confirming her as one of the newest members of the team.
