Richarlison scored for Tottenham’s under-21s in their EFL Trophy clash against Cheltenham Town, a rare moment of action for the out-of-favour striker this season. The 29-year-old Brazil international found the net after Cheltenham took the lead, helping Spurs level the game before it eventually went to penalties.
Tottenham’s senior squad has left Richarlison on the sidelines since the start of the 2023–24 Premier League campaign. His only appearance came during the 3-0 defeat at Brentford on the opening weekend in August. Since then, the forward has not been named in Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad, and his summer attempts to move on to Everton and Vasco da Gama did not materialise.
The EFL Trophy match at Cheltenham saw the League Two side take an early lead through George Miller. Richarlison responded quickly for Tottenham’s young side, slotting home a first-time finish from a right-wing cross. The goal gave Spurs a foothold in the match, which was further strengthened when Miracle Adewole put the under-21s ahead.
Cheltenham, however, fought back late on. Miller scored again deep into stoppage time to equalise and force the game into a penalty shootout. The final outcome of the shootout has not been confirmed.
Richarlison’s involvement in the under-21 side offers a glimpse of his current standing at Tottenham. The striker remains contracted to the club but has not broken back into the senior squad, with transfer options having fallen through in recent months. His performance against Cheltenham was a reminder of his quality, but it remains to be seen how Tottenham will use him moving forward in the season.
