Michael Penix Jr. leads Falcons into New Orleans as Saints aim to rebound on Monday Night Football

Michael Penix Jr. returned from a knee injury to lead the Atlanta Falcons to a dominant 35-point performance against the Green Bay Packers last week, setting the stage for a Monday Night Football clash with the New Orleans Saints in the Superdome. Penix’s first start of the season saw the Falcons generate 498 yards of offense, with Bijan Robinson rushing for 194 yards and two touchdowns and Drake London hauling in nine catches for 194 yards.

The Falcons’ offense had struggled through the first two weeks, failing to reach the red zone and totaling just 524 yards over those games. Penix’s comeback ignited a turnaround that has the Falcons aiming to build on their first win and avoid slipping back to a losing record. Their pass rush has also impressed, ranking first in the league with a pressure rate of 45.2 percent despite missing Jalon Walker to injury and James Pearce Jr. to suspension. Defensive linemen Gervon Dexter, Brandon Dorlus, Cameron Thomas, and Samson Ebukam have stepped up to fill the gap.

New Orleans, on the other hand, enters the game at 1-2 after a 35-29 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders that was marked by four turnovers and the loss of running back Travis Etienne to injured reserve. The Saints’ defense has been vulnerable, allowing more than 30 points in two of their three games this season, although they held the Baltimore Ravens to 17 points in the other. Opponents have started their drives deep in Saints territory, averaging starting field position at the 34.8-yard line, the third closest to the end zone in the NFL.

The Saints’ offense has been hampered by turnovers and inefficiency on the ground, especially following Etienne’s injury. Alvin Kamara and rookie Kendre Miller are expected to shoulder the running duties, but Kamara’s ground game has been inefficient in recent years, and Miller has averaged less than four yards per carry on limited attempts in his young career. Quarterback Tyler Shough has led the league in completions through the first three weeks, completing 91 of 132 passes for 917 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. Shough’s production has skewed heavily to the second half of games, where he has completed 59 of 79 passes for 639 yards and six touchdowns.

One matchup to watch will be Falcons wide receiver Drake London against Saints cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. London exploded in Week 3 with nine receptions for 194 yards, a stark contrast to his modest output in the first two games. McKinstry has split his snaps evenly between left and right corner but has not yet played in the slot this season. The Falcons may try moving London inside to exploit this and create more favorable matchups.

Atlanta’s ground game remains a focal point, with Robinson averaging a career-best 5.3 yards per carry so far this season. Despite the Falcons’ overall rushing average ranking among the league's worst, Robinson’s performance stands out, particularly after carrying the ball 29 times against Green Bay.

The Saints could have been undefeated if not for costly turnovers that have contributed to two one-possession losses. Avoiding giveaways will be critical against a Falcons team that has shown the ability to capitalize on mistakes. With Penix back and the Falcons’ offense clicking, New Orleans faces a challenge in securing a home victory on Monday Night Football.
