Patriots hopeful A.J. Brown will return from ankle injury by Week 6

New England Patriots wide receiver A.J. Brown could be back on the field as soon as Week 6 following a high ankle sprain sustained in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Brown was placed on injured reserve shortly after the injury, which requires a minimum four-game absence, but NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported the Patriots are hopeful the three-time All-Pro will return at the earliest opportunity.

Garafolo clarified there is no confirmation yet that Brown will make a Week 6 comeback but said, “The hope is that he'll be back Week 6. Now, that's a hope without [confirmation], but that's when he's eligible to return. We'll see how that goes.” This timeline would allow Brown to rejoin the Patriots after missing the first five games, a boost the team is eager to secure.

Brown’s presence has been sorely missed on New England’s offense, which has struggled to gain traction through three games. Quarterback Drake Maye has had a difficult start to his second NFL season, throwing just one touchdown against seven turnovers. Meanwhile, Romeo Doubs, expected to contribute significantly at wide receiver, has failed to make an impact, and Mack Hollins remains the only other consistent receiving option.

The Patriots’ offensive woes have been apparent as they have yet to find rhythm or scoring consistency. Brown’s return would add a reliable target for Maye and potentially ease the pressure on the struggling quarterback. Brown’s ability to stretch defenses and make plays after the catch could provide the Patriots with much-needed dynamism.

The team’s injury reserve regulations allow Brown to return after missing four games, making Week 6 the earliest possible return date. Until then, the Patriots will continue to rely on a depleted receiving corps. The offense’s performance in the coming weeks will likely influence how urgently New England pursues Brown’s full recovery.

Brown’s injury occurred in the Patriots’ 17-14 loss in Week 1. Since then, the team has not managed to improve their offensive production significantly. The lack of a dependable receiver has been a glaring weakness, and Brown is widely regarded as the player most capable of remedying that.

At this stage, the Patriots have not issued an official update on Brown’s recovery timeline. The hope expressed by Garafolo reflects optimism within the organization but stops short of guaranteeing a Week 6 return.

The Patriots face several games without Brown, and how they adapt on offense will be critical. Brown’s eventual return could shift the team’s fortunes, but for now, they remain in a challenging position.
