The Chicago Cubs trounced the Detroit Tigers 11-2 in a one-sided game at Wrigley Field on Tuesday night.
The Tigers had been riding high after a thrilling win on Monday night, but Framber Valdez's start was a far cry from that success. Valdez lasted just 2/3 of an inning, giving up 5 hits, 6 runs, and 2 walks.
The Cubs' David Peterson had a relatively easy go of it, going 6 innings and giving up just 1 run. However, it was the first inning that set the tone for the rest of the game. Pete Crow-Armstrong led off with a triple, and Seiya Suzuki walked to load the bases. Alex Bregman then took a fastball to the chest, and Carson Kelly poked a two-run single through the right side. Michael Busch did the same to score Bregman for a 3-0 lead.
The Cubs continued to add on, scoring 7 runs in the second inning and 4 more in the fifth. By the time the Tigers finally got on the board in the ninth, the game was all but over.
The Tigers' Zach McKinstry was the last hope, but he flew out to left field to end the game. The Cubs' Jake Rogers had a standout performance, striking out two batters in the eighth inning. The Tigers' Hao-Yu Lee did manage to get on base in the ninth, but a home run by Matt Vierling narrowed the gap to 11-2.
The finale and rubber match is Wednesday night at 8:10 pm EDT. The Cubs will look to take the series, while the Tigers will try to salvage a win and avoid a sweep.
