The Dodgers Hang on for Gritty Win, Level Series vs. Phillies
The Los Angeles Dodgers took a crucial 2-1 win against the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, leveling the series and setting up a decisive rubber match on Wednesday.
Inclement weather delayed the first pitch by over an hour, but the Dodgers avoided their second cancellation of the week. The delay didn't seem to faze Max Muncy, who hit a 421-foot two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning. This marked the second time on this roadtrip that Muncy has single-handedly driven in all of the Dodgers' runs in a winning effort.
Justin Wrobleski got the ball for the Dodgers in the second game of the series and managed to put together a solid outing after the Phillies got to him early. Philadelphia scored their first run of the game in the first inning, as Bryce Harper doubled with two outs before Alec Bohm drove him in with a single. Wrobleski shut the hosts down afterwards, though, pitching a total of 6.1 innings with just the one run allowed.
Wrobleski also struck out seven batters during the game, which ties his fourth-highest total of the season. He logged his seventh quality start of the year.
The Dodgers nearly scored their first run of the game in the top of the third inning, after catcher Eliezer Alfonzo shot a ball in the gap for a double—his first MLB extra-base hit. However, the Dodgers couldn't capitalize on the opportunity as Shohei Ohtani was thrown out at second just before Alfonzo touched home plate.
The Dodgers claimed the lead in the top of the fourth inning, and it proved to be the decisive moment in the game. With Muncy's two-run homer, the Dodgers didn't need much offense for the remainder of the game, and the one run advantage proved to be plenty as they tied up the series.
Eric Lauer, originally slated to pitch Tuesday, will start the series finale on Wednesday. The game starts at 3:40 p.m. PT, and it will be a must-watch for Dodgers fans as the team looks to take the lead in the series.
