Sam LaPorta cleared for Lions training camp return
Sam LaPorta has been given the green light to rejoin the Detroit Lions at training camp after recovering from a back injury.
The 24-year-old tight end, who suffered a herniated disc in Week 10 of the 2025 season, underwent a microdiscectomy to alleviate the issue. He's now fully cleared to participate in training camp.
LaPorta's third season with the Lions was cut short to nine games, with the tight end trying to regain the form that earned him a Pro Bowl berth in his record-setting rookie season in 2023. He finished the 2025 season with 40 catches for 489 yards and three touchdowns.
LaPorta's rookie season was a remarkable one, as he set an NFL record for most receptions by a rookie tight end with 86 catches for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns. The second-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft out of Iowa had a breakout year.
The Lions' first season without Johnson as their offensive coordinator was marked by a decline in LaPorta's numbers. In 2024, he had 60 catches for 726 yards and seven touchdowns over 16 games.
New offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, who spent three seasons as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator, may bring a new approach that benefits LaPorta. Petzing utilized 13 personnel (one running back, three tight ends) while in Arizona, using it more than any other team in the NFL from 2023-25.
