The San Francisco 49ers have a budding star in their midst, one that could potentially upset Fernando Mendoza and become the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
NFL analyst John Breech of CBS Sports sees incredible potential in 49ers rookie De'Zhaun Stribling, who impressed in college with the Ole Miss Rebels.
Last season, Stribling caught 55 passes for 811 yards and had six receiving touchdowns, the most on his team. He also shone in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal against Georgia, catching seven passes for 122 yards.
The 49ers have a role for Stribling to fill, with Jauan Jennings having departed the team. Breech believes Stribling has the potential to wear the hat Jennings did in the team's efficient offensive attack.
Stribling's numbers in college were impressive, and he could be a good fit for the 49ers' scheme. If Mendoza doesn't get the playing time he needs, there's a strong case to be made that Stribling could snag the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award instead.
The 49ers are looking to rise up to the top this season, and having a star rookie on their roster would certainly help. Stribling's potential could be a key factor in their success.
The 49ers' coaching staff will need to give Stribling a chance to shine, and it remains to be seen whether he will be able to live up to his potential. One thing is certain, however – Stribling is a player to watch this season.
