STUART — Martin County didn't need to light up the scoreboard to stay unbeaten. The Tigers leaned on a punishing defense and a grind-it-out running game to outlast Santaluces 21-16 on Friday, Aug. 28, at Napoli Orthodontics Stadium.
Two of Martin County's three touchdowns came from the defense, which has become the program's calling card under longtime coach Rod Harris.
"It all works for us," Harris said. "That's our M.O. We play great defense, scoring twice on defense, which is an amazing job for us. And we try to control the ball with the running game. It's old-school football, but it's successful for us."
The formula has been working for a while. Dating to 2025, Martin County's last five regular-season victories have come by seven points or fewer. Friday's five-point win fits the pattern.
The Tigers (2-0) took a 14-7 lead late in the first half when senior defensive end Jonathan Leocal raced around the edge untouched and strip-sacked quarterback Jaxson Mariconi. Junior defensive tackle John Richter scooped up the loose ball and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown with 7 minutes, 10 seconds left before halftime.
The score stayed put until midway through the third quarter, when the defense struck again. Senior linebacker Landon Johnson applied pressure off the edge, forcing a deflected Mariconi pass that fell into the arms of senior captain Wyatt Parks. Parks rumbled down the sideline for a 56-yard interception return touchdown.
Martin County's only offensive score came three minutes into the second quarter. The Tigers marched 80 yards on 12 plays, capping the drive with an 11-yard quarterback keeper by Manny Louis.
While the offense couldn't convert other lengthy drives into points, the ground game did its job. Louis, junior running back Charles Ceasar and sophomore running back Arhmad Walker combined for more than 200 rushing yards, keeping the chains moving and the clock ticking.
"We've kind of taken on the identity over the years of being a defensive team," Parks said. "Like we saw tonight, our offense was playing well, and they got the job done."
Santaluces made things interesting late. Jason Guillaume connected with Jayvon Dawson on a long touchdown pass with 1:28 remaining to cut the deficit to 21-16, but the ensuing onside kick bounced out of bounds, sealing the win for the Tigers.
Harris acknowledged his team isn't built for blowouts. The longtime coach knows a stress-free night is rare. But the alternative — a physical, defensive-minded approach — has proven fruitful, and it's exactly how the program drew it up.
Martin County moves to 2-0 on the season, with a clear identity and two wins to show for it. The Tigers' next test comes Friday as they look to extend their streak of close-game victories.
