The highest scoring game in Michigan high school football history ended with a quarterback who accounted for eight touchdowns on the losing side. Lee Campbell Jr., a junior at Battle Creek Central, threw for one score and ran for seven more in a 77-76 loss to Mattawan. He finished with 138 rushing yards on 26 carries.
That performance makes Campbell one of four nominees for the Bronson Battle Creek Boys Athlete of the Week, covering events from Sept. 7-12. The winner will be featured in a spotlight story in the Sunday edition of the Battle Creek Enquirer. Voting runs until Wednesday at 5 p.m.
The other nominees come from cross country and soccer. Harper Creek senior Christian Ayres won the Harper Creek Optimist Invitational on his home course in 17:30.8. His win helped the Beavers take the team title, placing three runners in the top five.
Lakeview junior Karson Lewis finished second at the Lakeview Invitational with a season best time of 16:11.15. The Spartans took second as a team.
In soccer, Adrian Mejia delivered the only goal for Lakeview in a 1-0 win over rival Battle Creek Central. Mejia scored 15 seconds into the match. The win moved Lakeview to six victories on the season, matching their entire win total from last year.
The weekly vote is part of the Enquirer's high school sports coverage, presented by Bronson Battle Creek Hospital. The publication runs the vote each week during the sports season, asking readers to pick the top performance across all high school sports. In 2026, the Enquirer will add a separate girls athlete of the week award.
Campbell's night against Mattawan stands out not just for the scoreboard but for the sheer volume of work. Eight total touchdowns in a single game is rare at any level. His 26 carries for 138 yards came in a game where both offenses moved the ball at will. The two teams combined for 153 points, a state record.
The cross country nominees both delivered strong results on their home courses. Ayres has been consistent for Harper Creek this season, and his win at the Optimist Invitational gives him a clear case for the weekly award. Lewis, a junior, posted his fastest time of the season at the Lakeview Invitational, finishing just behind the winner in a competitive field.
Mejia's goal came early and held up. A 15-second strike is about as quick as it gets in soccer, and it proved decisive in a rivalry game. Lakeview's win over Battle Creek Central also carried broader meaning for the program, matching last year's win total with much of the season still to play.
