Vinay Kumar starts full-time coaching as Karnataka face Andhra in Ranji Trophy opener

Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy campaign kicks off against Andhra on Sunday with R Vinay Kumar stepping into his first full-time coaching role. The former India pacer, who captained Karnataka to their last Ranji title in 2014-15, told STOI on the eve of the match that starting his coaching journey with his home team “feels great.”

The fixture in Vijayawada carries echoes of the past. Nearly six decades ago, GR Vishwanath announced himself to the cricketing world here with a 230 on his Ranji debut against Andhra. VS Vijay Kumar, another Karnataka stalwart, also made his debut in the same match. Now, Vinay Kumar returns to the city as a coach, aiming to build on that legacy.

Karnataka’s leadership will see a new face as R Smaran takes the captain’s armband for the first time in the senior side, filling in for Devdutt Padikkal. Vinay praised Smaran’s leadership qualities, saying, “I’ve seen Smaran captain sides in domestic tournaments. Apart from being a good leader, he is also a shrewd captain. He ticks a crucial box by knowing the players well. With Dev and Smaran, Karnataka cricket is in good hands.”

The team faces challenges this season. Their young batting mainstays Padikkal and Smaran may miss parts of the campaign due to national duties. Padikkal is currently on India A duty against Australia A, which leaves Karnataka to rely on experienced batsmen like KL Rahul, Karun Nair, and Mayank Agarwal to fill the gap.

The bowling lineup has been hit hard by injuries. Four frontline pacers—Prasidh Krishna, Vyshak Vijaykumar, Vidwath Kaverappa, and Vidhyadhar Patil—are sidelined, with Patil ruled out for the season. The onus falls on Abhilash Shetty, M Venkatesh, Manvanth Kumar, and LR Kumar to step up. Vinay sees this as a chance to test the team’s depth. “We will miss our main pacers in terms of their experience and skill set. That said, their absence should be taken as a blessing in disguise to see how good your bench strength is,” he said.

Karnataka’s spin attack will lean heavily on leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal, supported by Shikhar Shetty and Ritesh Bhatkal. The dry pitch at Mulapadu and the soaring temperatures in Vijayawada could make the spinners decisive in the contest.

Andhra, led by Ricky Bhui, has made quarterfinal appearances five times since the 2019-20 season. Their coach Gary Stead, who was at the helm when New Zealand won the World Test Championship, brings a mix of experience and insight. The hosts will try to use their home advantage to challenge Karnataka.

Karnataka has a strong recent record against Andhra, winning three and drawing two of their last five encounters. Smaran enters the match eager to build on his recent form, which includes a half-century and a century against Jammu and Kashmir while playing for Rest of India in the Irani Cup. At 23, he aims to convert flashes of promise into consistency.

The match also signals a new chapter for Vinay Kumar, who last led Karnataka to Ranji glory almost a decade ago. His transition from player to coach begins in a city steeped in Karnataka cricket history, where the next phase of his career will unfold alongside emerging talents and seasoned campaigners alike.
