Victor Wembanyama spent part of his off-season training with Provence Rugby, a French second division club, embracing the physicality and team spirit of the sport. The 7ft 4in, 16st 11lbs NBA star joined the club for a fortnight in August, working on tackle drills, passing, and line-outs alongside the players.
Footage from Provence shows Wembanyama towering over his teammates during a huddle and taking part in pre-season friendly preparations. He shared a dressing-room embrace with Teimana Harrison, a former England international who now plays for Provence and earned five caps in 2016. Wembanyama was accompanied on the trip by San Antonio Spurs teammate Harrison Barnes.
“It was a great experience, seeing the team spirit they have over there,” Wembanyama said. “It was very inspiring to see the relationship between team-mates, coaches and fans. The training was really hard, really good for stability, movement patterns and developing strength, but I am more grateful for the experience of how I was welcomed there.”
He added, “I have never been welcomed anywhere like this. I wasn’t part of the team but they treated me like I was. I want to do it again.”
Wembanyama has a history of exploring unusual training methods. In 2025, he spent time with Shaolin monks in China focusing on physical and mental strength. This latest venture into rugby reflects his interest in broadening his athletic skills and mental approach.
This summer’s rugby stint coincided with Wembanyama hosting his Hoop Gambit event in his hometown of Le Chesnay. The event combines chess and basketball, underscoring his interest in both physical and mental challenges.
Wembanyama’s NBA season ended in disappointment after the San Antonio Spurs fell to the New York Knicks 4-1 in the NBA Finals in June. Meanwhile, Provence have made a strong start to their campaign, winning their first five league games as they aim for promotion to the Top 14. The club has been home to Wales internationals George North and Tomas Francis in recent years.
The connection between Wembanyama and Provence highlights a rare crossover between basketball and rugby at a professional level, showing his willingness to experiment with different team sports during the off-season. The experience has left a clear impression on the young star, who has confirmed plans to return.
