Texas volleyball slipped two places to No. 14 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings after a five-set loss to No. 5 Florida on Sunday. The Longhorns had climbed to No. 12 following a sweep of Auburn but dropped after their narrow defeat at Gregory Gym in Austin.
Texas, now 9-7 overall and 5-3 in SEC play, faced a tough weekend with Florida’s rise reflected in their jump to No. 5. The Gators improved from No. 7 after maintaining a 15-2 record, pushing Texas down despite the Longhorns’ strong effort in the five-set match.
Outside hitter Torrey Stafford was a key figure for Texas during the game against Florida, attempting to tip the ball over in crucial moments. The Longhorns have finished the hardest stretch of their schedule, having faced multiple ranked opponents within a short span.
Looking ahead, Texas will tackle two other ranked teams. No. 19 Texas A&M, with an 11-8 record and last season’s national champions, awaits, followed by No. 22 Vanderbilt, which is 15-2 in its second season back after program revival.
The Longhorns are set to play South Carolina at noon on Sunday in Columbia, South Carolina, before facing the challenging matchups with Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. The schedule places Texas in a strong position to test itself against tough competition moving forward.
The AVCA poll released on October 19 shows Nebraska holding the top spot with an unbeaten 19-0 record, followed by Pittsburgh and Louisville. Texas remains in the middle of the rankings with 783 total points, down from 12th the previous week.
Other SEC teams like Kentucky remain at No. 4, while Wisconsin holds sixth. SMU dropped to seventh, and Arizona State stayed eighth. The rankings reflect the competitive nature of the season, with teams like Purdue, BYU, and TCU all clustered near Texas’ position.
Texas’ recent performance, including the five-set loss to Florida, illustrates the fine margins in top-level college volleyball. The Longhorns will need to regroup quickly as they prepare for their upcoming matches against ranked opponents in the coming weeks.
