Texas football’s offense faltered again in a 27-24 loss to Florida on Saturday, dropping the Longhorns to 4-2 after consecutive defeats. Head coach Steve Sarkisian acknowledged the team’s struggles, pointing to difficulties on first downs and in short-yardage situations as the main reasons for the defeat.
“We didn’t play very good football today,” Sarkisian said in his postgame remarks, according to CJ Vogel of OnTexasFootball. “They ended up controlling the ball in the second half. Our inability to be effective on first down and also our inability to convert in short-yard situations — third and short, fourth and short — really was a snapshot of it all. So, very disappointed.”
Texas managed 24 points overall, but one of those scores came on a kick return rather than offensive execution. The Longhorns started the season strong, including a win over Ohio State, but have now lost back-to-back games to Oklahoma and Florida by the same 27-24 scoreline.
Sarkisian said the team has the talent to perform better and that it’s his responsibility to get them there. “We will work and we will get back,” he added. “We’ve got a better team than we are right now, and it’s my job to figure out to get us to play closer to, and then ultimately achieve our potential.”
Next up for Texas is a challenging match against Ole Miss. A win will be critical as the Longhorns aim to keep pace in the College Football Playoff race. Meanwhile, fans and commentators continue to question the team’s offensive consistency and Sarkisian’s direction after two consecutive narrow defeats.
