The Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp is in full swing, and already, some players are emerging as clear winners – and others are raising concerns. On the second day of practice, the Rodgers-to-Wilson connection looked incredibly strong, with Roman Wilson putting together another standout performance.
Roman Wilson was already garnering buzz as one of Aaron Rodgers' top targets on Day 1, and the young receiver looked even more impressive on Day 2. He made several big plays, and the connection between him and Rodgers is definitely one to keep an eye on over the next month. Wilson's impressive performance is a boost to the Steelers' receiving corps, which was in need of some depth after the departure of some key players.
Asante Samuel Jr. also had a standout day, making some great plays in his first practice in Latrobe. He made a beautiful pass defense on a deep ball intended for Pat Freiermuth, and is steadily emerging as one of Pittsburgh's top cornerbacks. Samuel's performance is a welcome addition to the Steelers' secondary, which was in need of some help after the loss of a key player.
The Steelers' special teams unit also had a strong day, with Chris Boswell looking in midseason form and Cameron Johnston punting bombs on the second day of practice. The veterans of the group delivered two standout special teams performances, and it's clear that they're going to be a key factor in the Steelers' success this season. Travis Homer, meanwhile, is playing a big role on special teams, and his versatility could land him a spot on the 53-man roster.
DeShon Elliott, who was held out of team drills to open training camp, returned to first-team reps on Day 2 and was solid for Pittsburgh. Exciting is an understatement, as Elliott was a key player for the Steelers over the past two years before a season-ending hamstring injury put him on the shelf midway through the 2025 season. His return to the field is a major boost to the Steelers' defense.
Not everyone had a good day, however. Daylen Everette received his welcome-to-the-NFL moment courtesy of DK Metcalf, who mossed the rookie cornerback en route to an insane touchdown. It happens to the best cornerbacks, and Everette should bounce back in a big way moving forward. Despite the setback, Everette has a lot to learn from this experience and will likely be a key player for the Steelers in the future.
Will Howard, meanwhile, failed to wow spectators on Day 1 of training camp, and he was arguably outplayed by rookie Drew Allar. On Day 2, Howard showed a little more promise but ended practice with an ugly overthrow that Sebastian Castro intercepted with ease. There's still plenty of time for Howard to surpass Mason Rudolph on the depth chart, but through two days, there just hasn't been enough there.
The Steelers' training camp is just getting underway, and it's clear that some players are going to have to step up their game if they want to make the 53-man roster. With a few days of practice left before the season gets underway, the competition is going to get fiercer, and we'll be keeping a close eye on how the players perform.
