Sourav Ganguly appointed head coach of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2027 after two seasons missing playoffs

Sourav Ganguly has been named head coach of Delhi Capitals for the 2027 Indian Premier League season, replacing Hemang Badani after the franchise failed to reach the playoffs in the past two years.

The former India captain’s appointment was confirmed by Delhi Capitals, who revealed Ganguly’s deep ties with the team. Since first joining the franchise in 2019 as an advisor, Ganguly has held various roles including Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s sides. More recently, he coached Pretoria Capitals, Delhi’s South African SA20 team, during the previous season.

“I am looking forward to take on the role of Head Coach in the IPL,” Ganguly said in a statement released by the franchise. “Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and one that I have shared a strong relationship with over the years.”

Ganguly acknowledged the advantage his prior experience with the franchise offers in his new position. “I have worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, which makes this an exciting responsibility for me," he added. “We have a talented group and have played a good brand of cricket in the recent past. I am looking forward to working with the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team.”

Delhi Capitals is co-owned by the GMR Group and JSW Group. The ownership arrangement alternates every two years, with GMR’s current tenure concluding in 2026. Parth Jindal, chairman and co-owner of Delhi Capitals and founder of JSW Sports, welcomed Ganguly’s return to the franchise in a coaching capacity.

“Dada is and has always been an integral part of the Delhi Capitals family,” Jindal said. “I am incredibly proud and honoured to announce that one of the greatest Indian captains and administrators is now stepping into coaching by taking over as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals.” He added, “I am excited to see him take on this role and I’m sure that under his guidance and visionary leadership Delhi Capitals will be best prepared to challenge for the IPL title.”

Ganguly’s appointment comes after two IPL seasons where Delhi Capitals narrowly missed out on the playoffs, a situation that prompted the franchise to make changes to their coaching staff. Hemang Badani, who led the team as head coach during that period, has now been replaced by Ganguly, whose extensive involvement with the franchise stretches over several years and includes leadership roles beyond the IPL.

This move marks Ganguly’s first time as head coach of an IPL team, although his coaching stint with Pretoria Capitals last year provided him with experience managing a squad in a franchise T20 league. The decision reflects Delhi Capitals’ intent to build on their past performances and strengthen their campaign for the 2027 season.

The franchise has not disclosed further details about the coaching team or any immediate changes to the player roster. Ganguly’s focus appears to be on consolidating the existing squad’s strengths and preparing them for a competitive season ahead.
