Shreyas Iyer Overtakes MS Dhoni with Historic India T20I Captaincy Record
Shreyas Iyer has broken a long-standing record in Indian T20I cricket, surpassing MS Dhoni's seven consecutive toss wins with an eighth straight victory as captain.
Iyer achieved this feat before a ball was bowled in the opening T20I against Zimbabwe in Harare on Thursday. The India skipper won the toss and elected to field first, moving past Dhoni's previous best in the record books.
The Harare Sports Club wicket, however, looked different from its usual nature, with Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza expecting plenty of runs despite some early assistance for the seamers. "This is not your typical Harare Sports Club wicket. I think there are a lot of runs on this wicket," Raza said.
India fielded a youthful XI featuring Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Rinku Singh alongside experienced skipper Iyer. Zimbabwe handed T20I debuts to Newman Nyamhuri and Ben Curran, while Milton Shumba missed the series with a hamstring injury and was replaced in the squad by Innocent Kaia.
The match marked Iyer's first time captaining in Harare, and he took the decision to bowl first based on the surface's appearance. "We are going to bowl first. This is my first time here, so I don't know how the wicket is going to play. But looking at the practice wickets and the practice wickets on the side, there was a decent amount of bounce," Iyer explained.
Iyer's praise for Zimbabwe's recent progress was evident in his comments. "They've been playing brilliantly for the last couple of years… The batsmen and the bowlers executing their strengths. It was amazing," he said.
The India captain's streak of eight consecutive toss wins is now the longest in Indian T20I history, surpassing Dhoni's seven achieved between 2010 and 2012. Virat Kohli follows with six consecutive toss wins, while Rohit Sharma and Dhoni also feature with streaks of five.
India's youthful XI will look to capitalize on the favorable toss result as they take on Zimbabwe in the T20I series. The match is set to be an exciting contest, with Zimbabwe's batsmen looking to take advantage of the Harare Sports Club wicket's generous nature.
Shreyas Iyer and his team will be looking to continue their winning streak and make a strong start to the series. The next match is scheduled to take place on Saturday, with India aiming to build on their successful start.
