Shadow Ridge edged Desert Ridge 10-7 in a defensive 6A flag football contest on Wednesday, Sept. 23, with Milyana Turner scoring the game’s only touchdown. The Stallions improved their record to 2-1 while the Jaguars dropped to 1-2 after a closely fought match.
Turner’s touchdown was the opening and deciding score, setting the tone early for Shadow Ridge. On defense, the Stallions leaned heavily on Ariel Barrera, whose interception proved crucial in maintaining their narrow lead. Barrera said after the game, “This was one of my better games,” acknowledging her role in the defensive effort.
Shadow Ridge head coach Theron Frazer credited his team’s defense for the victory. “I think it was a defensive effort this time, they did everything they needed to do,” he said. The Stallions’ defensive discipline limited Desert Ridge’s opportunities throughout the match.
Desert Ridge managed to keep the score close with a touchdown from Zalaya Flores. The Jaguars’ defense also showed resilience, particularly near the goal line. Assistant coach Reggie Warwick commented, “We did a good job on the goal-line defending,” highlighting their efforts to prevent a wider margin.
The game featured limited scoring but plenty of defensive intensity from both sides. Shadow Ridge’s interception and Turner’s touchdown ultimately made the difference. Desert Ridge struggled to convert key opportunities despite their defensive stands.
Shadow Ridge will next face Tolleson Union on Oct. 1, aiming to build on their 2-1 start. Desert Ridge has a longer gap before returning to action against Hamilton on Oct. 6, searching for their second win of the season.
