17 Friends Finish 100-Mile Challenge, Form Unbreakable Bond

Four friends, including Michelle Rzeszutek, Maria Gonzalez, Bryce Heinbaugh, and Annie Emery, have completed the 100-mile Burning River challenge in July, finishing in a time of 29 hours and 23 minutes.

The group had trained for months, with a weekly mileage of about 70 miles, but Gonzalez had reached as high as 130 miles a week before reducing her training to maintain the joy of running.

The Burning River 100 mile involves trail running through Northeast Ohio, including stretches of trail in Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Summit County Metroparks.

Heinbaugh, Rzeszutek, and Gonzalez completed the 100-mile challenge, but Emery was unable to finish the race, having completed 34 miles.

The group had previously run the Burning River 50 in 2025 and attempted a 100-mile event at Mohican State Park in May, but did not finish due to time constraints.

Heinbaugh said the experience was "fuel to the fire" for their decision to run the Burning River 100 in July, despite Emery's inability to complete the race.

The group's commitment to each other and their faith has deepened through their shared experiences, with Heinbaugh stating that ultra-marathoners must be willing to fail as part of the sport.

Rzeszutek said she is grateful to be part of the group, which she found through a chance meeting on the street, and Gonzalez echoed her sentiments, expressing joy in running with her friends every day.

The group takes Sundays off from training but gathers early the next morning to start another week.

Chris Purola and Erik van't Veer also train with the group, which has fostered a sense of community and camaraderie among its members.

The friends' achievement serves as a testament to the power of friendship and shared goals, and their experience is a reminder that ultra-marathon running is not just a physical challenge, but also a mental and spiritual one.

The group's next steps are unclear, but one thing is certain: their bond has been strengthened through their shared experience of completing the 100-mile challenge.
